Recovering a white-tailed deer takes patience, timing, and careful tracking. Follow these quick tips for success:
Double Lung / Heart: ~2 hours
Liver: 12–24 hours
Gut: 15–24 hours
Tip: During the rut, use the maximum wait time for each shot type.
Flag the trail as you go (toilet paper works great).
Walk just beside the blood trail, not on it.
Use a tracking app like onX Hunt to mark points and navigate.
Start at the last blood spot.
Expand your search in circles: 5 ft → 10 ft → 15 ft → 20 ft.
If no blood is found at 20 ft, it’s time to back out and reassess.
Follow your entry trail back; don’t stray off..
Avoid grid searching – human scent can confuse recovery dogs and make locating your deer harder.
Pro Tip: Patience + careful tracking = higher recovery success. Let the deer tell you the trail to follow.
Arrows can help with evidence in shot placement
Gut shot, Will have foul smell, slimy may show evidence of deer diet IE corn, acorn.
Liver, Dark red painted arrow, Drys fast and flakes
Lungs, Pink (your probably not reading this if you doubled lunged)
Stomach, Part of the Rumen in the stomach can give you a sweet smell.
Intestinal, Can smell like poop, can be slimy.
